Cape Breton Highlands National Park
The northern and most rugged tip of Cape Breton Island, between the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Atlantic Ocean. Within its 950 kmz (366 sq mi), the park encompasses a great variety of wildlife and landscape: a magnificent highland plateau with windswept barrens, deep-walled canyons, picturesque waterfalls, sandy beaches and spectacular cliffs plunging into the sea. Through it all winds the Cabot Trail, one of the world's most scenic drives. For golfers, the Highlands Links is one of the world's finest courses. For skiers, is area offers some of Atlantic Canada's best skiing. Accommodations vary from motels and cabins located in nearby communities to serviced and semi-serviced campgrounds, located along the Cabot Trail. In the park itself, there's everything from primitive backcountry campsites to full-service trailer hookups Park entry fees are charged from mid-May to mid-October.



Provincial Parks and Community Parks

Most provincial parks are open May 19-Oct 9, and admission is free. This symbol wheel chairsymbol indicates that there are wheelchair-accessible facilities, but the trails may not be accessible. Most provincial parks provide tables and pit toilets. Open campfires, camping (except in campgrounds) and consumption of alcoholic beverages are prohibited. Swimming is unsupervised (unless noted) and at your own risk.

Port Hood Station Provincial Park E73
Port Hood Station. Off Rte 19. A picnic park with a cobble beach. Picnic tables, boardwalk. Adjacent to white-sand beach. Open May 19 to Oct 9.
South West Margaree Provincial Park D14
2 km (1.5 mi) south of the junction of Rtes 19 and 395. A roadside picnic area next to a small brook, with tables around the edge of an open field. Open May 19 to Oct 9.
Trout Brook Provincial Park E14 ,
Rte 395, 22.5 km (14 mi) south of the junction of Rtes 19 and 395. Tables under a mixed-wood forest. Beyond the forested area is a beautiful white sandy beach on the shores of Lake Ainslie. Open May 19 to Oct 9.

Cabot Trail

Cabot Landing Provincial Park A1
Cape North.10 km (6 mi) north of the Cabot Trail. Interesting picnic and beach park overlooking Aspy Bay. Picnic tables in open fields. National Historic Site: interpretive cairn. Hike and beachcomb along the sandy beach. Open May 19 to Oct 9.
Cape Smokey Provincial Park B16
Cape Smokey. Top of Smokey Mtn on the Cabot Trail. Picnic tables, lookoff views. A trail along the coast, 5 km (3 mi) each way, offers even more spectacular views. Rest stops along trail. Allow 4 hours for hike. Brochure available. Open May 19 to Oct 9.
Lake O'Law Provincial Park D14
Lake O'Law. On the Cabot Trail, 24 km (15 mi) north of Hwy 1 O5. An inland park on the shore of Lake O'Law, with boating and swimming opportunities. Picnic areas in fields and mixed-wood stands. Boat launch. Open May 19 to Oct 9.
North River Provincial Park D15
North River Bridge. 3.5 km (2 mi) off the Cabot Trail. A small picnic park located above the river, well-known for fishing. Trail, 9 km (5.5 mi) each way, through a steep-sided river valley to a beautiful 32-m (104-ft) waterfall; allow 7 hours for hike; brochure available. Open May 19 to Oct 9.
Plaster Provincial Park C15
North Shore, on the Cabot Trail. A picnic park with rolling topography and several ponds in sinkholes. Scattered tables, some with shelters, in open areas along the forest edge. A short trail leads from the high bank to St. Ann's Bay. Open May 19 to Oct 9.
St. Ann's Provincial Park D15
St. Ann's. On the Cabot Trail,1.5 km (1 mi) north of St. Ann's. A small picturesque picnic park on the shore of North Gut. Tables under softwood trees, accessible via a short trail beside the highway. Open May 19 to Oct 9.
Uisge Bahn Falls Provincial Park D15
Forks Baddeck. Hwy 105, Exit 9,15 km; watch for signs.1.5-km (1-mi) trail leads to a spectacular 15-m (50-ft) waterfall in a granite gorge. 2-km (1.5-mi) trail following the North Branch River. Beautiful hardwood stands along cliffs. Brochure available. Parking, picnic tables (some with shelters). Open May 19 to Oct 9.

Barachois Provincial Park D16
Barachois. Rte 223,12 km (8 mi) south of Hwy 125. Formerly a farm, this picnic park is situated on a knoll with a lovely view of Bras d'Or Lake. A short trail leads from the park down to a marshy lagoon. Open May 19 to Oct 9.
Ben Eoin Provincial Park E16
Ben Eoin. Rte 4. Small secluded park on an old farm against hardwood-covered hills; picnic tables are at the edge of the fields. A short walk leads to a lookoff with a view of East Bay. Open May 19 to Oct 9.
Bras d'Or Provincial Park D16
Big Bras d'Or. Off Hwy 105. A boat launch into Great Bras d'Or. Open May 19 to Oct 9.
Dalem Lake Provincial Park D15
Boularderie. 3 km (2 mi) east of Boularderie East, 4 km (2.5 mi) north off Hwy 105. Park on a small lake. Hardwood-shaded tables. White sand beach; boat launch for nonmotorized boats. Trail 1.5 km (0.5 mi). Open May 19 to Oct 9. ·

Dundee. 4 km (2.5 mi) west of Dundee Golf Course. Boat launch. Sandy beach. Open May 19 to Oct 9.
Groves Point Provincial Park D16
Groves Point. 5 km (3 mi) south of Hwy 105, before crossing St. Andrew's Channel. A popular site with a sandy beach and warm salt water. Tables are scattered under a softwood stand. Open May 19 to Oct 9.
Irish Cove Provincial Park F15
Irish Cove. Rte 4, 32 km (20 mi) northeast of St. Peter's. A small roadside picnic park on a hill overlooking Bras d'Or Lake. Some tables are sheltered. Open May 19 to Oct 9.
MacCormack Provincial Park E75
Iona. Off Rte 223, 0.3 km (0.2 mi) north of lona. A small picnic park overlooking Bras d'Or Lake, with tables scattered through a sofhvood forest. Beach access, view of picturesque Plaster Cove. Open May 19 to Oct 9.

Whycocomagh Provincial Park E14

Mira River Provincial Park E17
Albert Bridge. 3 km (2 mi) east of Rte 22 from Albert Bridge. A peninsula with natural coves and swimming areas. Picnic sites range from open shoreline to secluded. Toilets, change house. Camping. Open May 19 to Oct 9.
Petersfield Provincial Park D16
Near Westmount on Rte 239. View of the south arm of Sydney Harbour. The site of ruins of several 18th-century eastates. Picnic tables, interpretive signs. Extensive network of trails (5 km/3 mi). Open year-round.
Point Michaud Provincial Park G15
Point Michaud. Rte 247,1 km (0.5 mi) east of Point Michaud. A fantastic 3-km (2-mi) sandy beach, backed by marram-covered sand dunes and large cranberry bogs. Open May 19 to Oct 9.
Pondville Beach Provincial G14
